Customise your own OFFZONE badge: Shitty Add-On with the light on
The third international conference on practical cybersecurity OFFZONE 2020 is just 71 days away. While the organisation of the event is in full swing, the attendees are welcome to kill the wait with some fun activities. In today’s post, we’ll talk about a chip that will allow OFFZONE attendees to secure a member’s badge for themselves with unique design and configuration.
When preparing for the conference, we pay close attention to the concept of the badge. Last year’s badge functioned as an interactive printed circuit board resembling the form of a 3.5-inch floppy disk. It was possible to tweak the board: participants could solder on a display, an infrared receiver and other interesting things right at the very event itself. More about this in the previous post.
This year, we have remained faithful to the spirit of DIY. Moreover, we decided to give the conference participants the opportunity to fully customise their badge. The possibilities here are endless and limited only by the imagination and a very specific nature of the Shitty Add-On V1 connector (for more information on the SAO standard, its performance characteristics and more, see here). The standard is clear and simple: even those with little skills in soldering and electronics would be able to prepare add-ons in advance.
In order for your add-on to match the connector on the board and look presentable at the same time, it must satisfy a number of requirements
· size must not exceed 5 × 5 cm;
· should be facing away from the circuit board;
· should not overlap with the logo;
· see the pinout on the diagram below (the first pin on the PCB is marked with a square).
This year we will have to make do without I2C support (the standard has a bad influence on us), but we should still be able to make the LEDs work: the add-on comes with a power supply! In other matters it is better to use the recommendations from the SAO specification.
If you don’t get a chance to prep an add-on for April, not to worry! We can guarantee with near certainty that it could be used for the next-years badge at OFFZONE 2021.
By the way, you can use any Shitty Add-On, including those from other conferences.
Now, of course, customisation is not the only funky trait of the OFFZONE 2020 badge.
Similar to the previous years, the badge is your wallet, where you can store OFFCOINs — the official internal currency at the conference.
The badge is also filled with tasks, and if you manage to complete them, you will be showered with OFFCOIN and glory!
